TripLog integrates seamlessly with iBeacon technology to automatically detect when your trips start and end. The TripLog iBeacon uses Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (BLE) to detect when your phone is near a beacon.
The advantages of using iBeacon with TripLog are:
TripLog can very reliably detect when you are in your vehicle and running.
iBeacon has been designed to be power efficient and minimize battery consumption.
TripLog will continue to detect the start or end of trips even after force closing the app or restarting your phone.
To use iBeacon with TripLog, you will need a TripLog Beacon. Just plug it into your vehicle's USB charger and forget about it.
Here is how to use the TripLog Beacon device with TripLog:
Open the TripLog app > Main Menu (three line icon ≡) > AutoStart On > Select AutoStart Option > TripLog Beacon Device. (Allow Bluetooth access if prompted)
Select the TripLog Beacon device:
Plug the TripLog Beacon into a vehicle USB charger and turn the vehicle on
Select the Beacon device from the list
Link TripLog Beacon devices to vehicles
TripLog Beacon and select the vehicle to link it to (the first connection will automatically be assigned to your default vehicle)
Close the app. Plug the TripLog Beacon into a vehicle USB charger and turn the vehicle on.
The next time you start the vehicle, within a few seconds you should see a message in the notification bar that says "iBeacon connected. Waiting for speed > 5 mph."
Start driving. Once you reach 5 mph (the speed threshold is configurable) for a second or two, you will hear an alert and another message will appear in the notification bar: "Trip started automatically. Park and unplug to end it."
When you arrive at your destination, stop the vehicle. The trip will stop within a few minutes.
iBeacon Auto Start Troubleshooting - iOS
There are a few things to check if TripLog is not detecting your iBeacon.
Open iOS Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
Open iOS Settings > Privacy > Location Services > make sure it is turned on, then select TripLog > make sure it is set to "Always".
Make sure it is not an issue with the vehicle USB charger by testing the iBeacon plugged into a computer or wall charger.
The iBeacon works best when the USB port only receives power while the engine is running. If the USB port is always on, auto tracking may not work properly.
If you restarted your phone, it can take up to 15 minutes before TripLog begins detecting the iBeacon reliably. If it still does not work after 15 minutes, open the TripLog app once, then press the home button so it stays in the background.
