Location Permissions: Why "Always Allow" Is Required and How Your Privacy Is Protected
Setting location permission to "Always Allow" (or "Allow all the time" on Android) frequently raises questions about off-hours monitoring. This setting is an operating system requirement for background automation, not a continuous tracking mechanism.
The breakdown below outlines how the underlying technology operates, why standard in-app permissions fail, and how your privacy controls function.
How Background Trip Detection Works
TripLog does not run continuous GPS pings when you are stationary.
Low-power sensors remain idle: The app relies on device-level hardware triggers (such as Bluetooth connection to your vehicle or core motion coprocessors) to wake up. Until motion or vehicle connectivity is confirmed, the GPS receiver stays dormant.
No stationary logging: TripLog does not record coordinates while you are at home, working at a desk, or running personal errands on foot. Location data is requested only when a vehicle trip is actively occurring.
Why "While Using the App" Causes Incomplete Trips
Mobile operating systems define an application as "in use" only when it is displayed in the foreground of an unlocked screen.
Operating system shutdowns: If permission is set to "While Using," iOS and Android cut off location data access immediately when the phone is locked, when a call comes in, or when you switch to navigation and audio apps.
Data loss: Cutting off background location access leads to fragmented route maps, missing start/stop points, and lost mileage data that cannot be recovered for expense or tax documentation.
Built-In Privacy Controls
You maintain direct control over when data is captured and how it is reported:
Working hours scheduler: Within TripLog Settings > Auto Start, you can define your standard shift. The app will ignore trips detected outside those designated hours. If a trip is not tracking, TripLog does not have or collect any location data.
Trip classification: Trips can be categorized as personal. In many organizations, marking a trip as personal will hide the trips until submitted or modified to Business.
Manual override: AutoStart can be paused or toggled off at any point if you want zero automated tracking. (Some organizations may lock the tracking method; contact your admin for details)
Configuration and Troubleshooting Steps
Follow these steps to confirm permissions are set properly for automatic logging:
In-App Health Check:
Open TripLog and tap the Main Menu (≡).
AutoStart.
Confirm AutoStart is toggled On.
Open System Permissions and verify all items show blue checkmarks. Tapping an item marked in orange or red will route you to the appropriate device settings page to update.
iOS System Settings:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > TripLog.
Set access to Always.
Toggle Precise Location to On so that route geometries match actual roads for tax compliance.
Android System Settings:
Go to Settings > Apps > TripLog > Permissions > Location.
Select Allow all the time.
Toggle Use precise location to On.
