5. Driver Training : AutoStart Options Part 3

Learn how to configure TripLog's AutoStart settings, including speed threshold, timeout, and default working hours.

In our previous video we covered the hardware options available if your organization chose to use them in addition to the app's built-in autostarts. In this video we'll talk about the settings and options you have to configure those autostarts.

Introduction to TripLog AutoStart:
There are a few settings available to configure the different autostarts. As long as your organization allows you to choose the option you use to collect mileage, we'll cover the settings available to customize that automatic tracking.

The on/off toggle will be the main setting for determining whether you want to use AutoStart tracking or not. Once you've chosen to use automatic tracking, you'll want to choose the autostart that works best for you.

Please note: if you need tracking for multiple vehicles, you cannot "mix" autostarts between vehicles. MagicTrip will only work automatically for one vehicle. If you had a second vehicle, you could manually override automatic tracking by selecting the other vehicle for a manual GPS trip.

If you choose to use car Bluetooth, you would need to be able to do so in both, or you would have to go back to manually tracking mileage in the other vehicle. The same applies to our TripLog Drive and TripLog Beacon devices.

Speed Threshold:
In the AutoStart settings you can configure your speed threshold. While the defaults cover the vast majority of situations, your individual device's capabilities and your driving environment can determine your choices. For example, if you make frequent stops in a small area, such as in last-mile delivery, you may need to set a lower speed threshold to trigger movement sooner. If you feel that trip starts are too sensitive in an urban environment, increasing the speed threshold will compensate for the proximity to tall buildings.
Keep in mind that changing these settings can affect older devices more significantly.

Timeout Setting:
The Timeout setting means different things between autostarts. When used with MagicTrip, the Timeout will determine the end of the trip by measuring the time from when you stop and are below the speed threshold until a trip ends. Once that stopped time elapses, the trip will end. The default setting of 5 minutes is recommended, but I wouldn't recommend a longer period unless you stop frequently and want continuous tracking.

The Timeout setting when used with car Bluetooth, TripLog Beacon, TripLog Drive, and Plug N Go is a countdown timer on the initial connection before the trip. When a connection trigger occurs during ignition, such as a Bluetooth connection or a hardware device connecting to the app, a timer will start. That timer is the duration during which the app continues monitoring movement. If the speed threshold isn't exceeded before the TIMEOUT period ends, the app will stop monitoring movement until the next connection trigger.
An example of when the timeout trigger should be kept in mind is if you get into your vehicle to warm it up or cool it down on a day of extreme temperature. From the initial ignition of the vehicle, the app connects to Bluetooth or the TripLog beacon. If the TIMEOUT elapses and you start driving, the trip may not be recorded. If you have notifications enabled, it will indicate whether the app is on standby monitoring movement during the timeout period. The recommendation would be to extend the TIMEOUT beyond the longest time you might have from ignition to actual driving; remember that more time is better in this case.
If for any reason you've exceeded the timeout and need to start tracking, you'll just need to start the trigger that activated the timeout. This can be restarting the vehicle, toggling Bluetooth, or disconnecting and reconnecting the Beacon or Drive.

Default Working Hours Setting:
With TripLog you can have the app automatically define your business purpose for trips based on your working hours. You can set your working hours to match your schedule by moving the slider to the correct start and end times, in addition to enabling those working hours on specific days. If a trip started within the set period, it will be classified by default as the working hours default, usually Business.
You can choose the default for outside of hours or outside the defined working hours to be Personal, or even have the app not track or autostart at all. Keep in mind that some organization settings may limit this option.

A frequent question we get is: what happens if I start a trip near the end of my working hours and stop afterward? If your working hours end time is 5 p.m. and you start a trip at 4:50, it will start tracking as business and will remain that way when it ends, even if that end time is after 5 p.m., since it started within working hours. The same applies in reverse: if you start a trip before your working hours, it will follow the outside-of-hours setting even if you continue driving into the start of working hours.
Remember that you can always reclassify the trip between Business and Personal, as long as your organization has allowed editing of saved trips.

Other Defaults:

There are a few other options for setting the default activity of your trips. By navigating to the vehicles page, you can set your vehicle's default activity to the one you want. This will override the working hours setting.
An example use of this would be having a vehicle that will only be used for Business. You can have all trips tracked on that vehicle default to Business to reduce the amount of reclassification you might need to do.
As always, you can change the associated trip activity later if your settings allow it. Be careful if you enable this setting, as it may not be obvious that it's configured unless you return to this menu.

Speed Threshold

MagicTrip Timeout

The timeout setting for MagicTrip is the timer at the END of the trip when you're below the speed threshold. If there's no movement at the end of the trip during the timeout, the trip ends. The default setting of 5 minutes is good for capturing most stops without including heavy traffic.

When should you change it?

If you regularly drive in heavy traffic, you can increase the timeout slightly to link possible stops together. You can always merge trips after they've been recorded.

If you need the app to generate more legs for deliveries or other purposes, you can reduce the timeout, but keep in mind that trips could end in the middle of traffic.

TripLog Drive, TripLog Beacon, Car Bluetooth, and Plug-n-Go Timeout

The timeout setting on TripLog Drive, TripLog Beacon, car Bluetooth, and Plug-n-Go is the period before driving. When the connection trigger occurs, it will put the app into Movement Monitoring or Ready to Track, and it will monitor movement until the Speed Threshold is exceeded. If the Timeout elapses, it will stop monitoring movement until the connection is reset. In most cases, more time is better, and it may need to be as much as 20-30 minutes depending on your activity.
